​In 2025 only 60.8% of IMGs who applied matched into a residency spot leaving 6,291 IMG applicants unmatched. The PGY1 match rate for US citizen IMGs was 67.8% and for non US citizen IMGs 58%, now showing a downward trend for the third consecutive year. In 2020 there were 12,074 IMG applicants for a US residency spot, and in 2025 that number has increased to 18,500 applicants. For Internal Medicine, the total number of IMG applicants increased from 12,323 in 2024 to 12,966 in 2025 making it a more competitive time to apply as an IMG.
